Israel’s chronic lack of fresh water forces its engineers to pioneer some of the most innovative solutions to optimize the country’s limited resources in addition to increasing its supply through water reclamation and desalination.
Israel is number one for water reclamation, recycling 75% of its sewage & wastewater. Spain is number two with 12%.
The country has maintained the same total water consumption since the 1960’s despite significant population growth. Desalination is one of the main tools that helped Israel achieve this limited consumption. Israel initiated seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination and currently boasts the world's largest and most cost-efficient SWRO desalination plant, annually producing 130 million cubic meters.
Agriculturally, Israel has successfully advanced through the invention of drip irrigation and saline water irrigation. Drip irrigation helped achieve up to 80% of water efficiency (versus 40% with open irrigation), the highest rate in the world. Saline water irrigation recycles warm, geothermal saline water from fishponds and reuses it to irrigate a variety of crops, from greenhouse tomatoes to grapes grown in desolate desert conditions.
Aside from achieving international success in commercializing its salt water purification and drip irrigation technologies, Israel has also positioned itself as a global leader in smart grid technology innovations that analyze data surrounding water delivery, quality and security. Focusing on IT solutions to the water shortage, Israeli company TaKaDu uses sparse data from existing sensors and combines it with weather, acoustic, and GIS data to create a smart water grid, allowing the water utility to improve its ability to plan and forecast, saving water and resources in the process.
In a world progressively more threatened by water shortage, Israel acts as a model of conservation by turning a natural weakness to a viable strength.
