Characterized by ingenuity and creativity, Israel’s Life Sciences sector has been leading the world in new technologies and techniques that not only extend life but also improve its quality.

Israel asserts its position as the world’s best place for bio-pharmaceutical (biopharma) research by having the most new patents filed in biopharma each year, the most new companies founded in biopharma, and the most biopharma companies publicly traded over the past five years.

Israel has over 1,000 Life Sciences companies, with 50-60 new companies being formed every year. Backed by extensive international R&D and commercial partnerships as well as world renowned academic research institutes, namely The Technion and The Weizmann Institute, Israel’s Life Sciences companies have been able to make significant contributions to the global medical community.

Inventions such as Given Imaging's ingestible Pillcam diagnose and photograph abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract making it easier for physicians to more effectively and rapidly treat patients In less invasive ways while Teva’s Copaxone and Azilect, drugs for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, have put Israel at the forefront of the Life Sciences sector.

Multinationals that have already begun to take advantage of Israel’s potential include Perrigo, GE Healthcare, and Philips Medical.

Within the field of Life Sciences, Israel has achieved technical expertise in three major areas:

Medical Devices

In the field of Imaging, Philips Brilliance CT scanner was developed in Israel and allows a comprehensive image of a patient to be taken in seconds rather than minutes. Within the scope of disposable and implantable devices, Israel’s Medinol developed a closed cell stent design that encourages healthy blood flow to the heart. Cryotherapy technology by Galil Medical freezes and ablates benign cancerous tissue.

Healthcare IT

Israel has implemented computerized patient records with 100% of primary care physicians. Computerized patient records, amalgamated with a well-developed national healthcare system, make Israel a perfect location for the expansion and development of Healthcare IT systems.

Israeli bio-data firm Roshtov, publicly traded since 2000, manages patient-file oriented software solutions while Medic4All Group has developed wireless technology for medical data transmission from the patient’s environment to monitoring centers by phone or internet.

Many more Isreali companies, such as dbMotion, are leading the world in Healthcare IT developments.

Bio-Pharmaceuticals

Biopharmaceuticals in Israel take the driving forces of both the pharmaceutics and biotechnology sub-industries and bring them together to achieve medical advances.

Israel asserts its position as the world’s best place for biopharma research by having the most new patents filed in biopharma each year, the most new companies founded in biopharma, and the most biopharma companies publicly traded over the past five years.

Israel’s focus within biopharma is in drug discovery, stem cell research, immunology, and more. Notable Israeli discoveries in biopharma include Doxil, a chemotherapy drug for the treatment of ovarian cancer, and Rebif, a treatment for Multiple Sclerosis with greater applications in the field of Central Nervous System disorders.

Additional Israeli companies involved in biopharmaceuticals are Teva Pharmaceuticals, Can-Fite, Gamida Cell Ltd., and Vaxil BioTherapeutics Ltd.
